What is the difference between
JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT
and HISTORIC JAMESTOWN?
Visitors to Jamestown encounter two distinct,
but complementary experiences of 17th century Virginia,
each telling the story of early Virginia in a different way.
The Jamestown Settlement Museum
is an immersive living history museum
designed to bring the past vividly to life.
It is especially well-suited for families
with school-aged children,
though it is genuinely fun for all ages.
Here, costumed educators guide visitors
through full-scale recreations
of the 1607 English fort,
allowing guests to step inside buildings,
handle objects, and engage with daily life
as it was experienced by the first English settlers.
The museum also features full-scale
replicas of the first three ships
that carried colonists to Virginia in 1607,
as well as a thoughtfully interpreted
Native American village
that presents Indigenous cultures
prior to English contact.
The experience is dynamic, interactive,
and highly accessible.
In contrast, Historic Jamestown
is the actual site of James Fort
and the later 17th-century town,
once the capital of colonial Virginia.
Managed primarily by the National Park Service,
with the archaeological site overseen
by a preservation organization,
this location offers a more contemplative
and authentic encounter with the past.
Visitors walk the original ground,
view ongoing excavations,
and see artifacts uncovered through archaeology.
Rather than reconstruction,
the emphasis here is on discovery, evidence,
and the actual landscape where history unfolded.
Together, these sites provide a fuller understanding:
one invites you to imagine,
the other allows you to stand where it truly happened.
